A Ride To Remember

Jasminder Singh

About Trail

Vehicle: Kawasaki

Start Point: New Delhi, Delhi 110001, India

Start Date: 20-September-2014

End Point: New Delhi, Delhi 110001, India

End Date: 27-September-2014

The Journey: New Delhi – Manali – Jispa – Leh – Khardungla – Leh – Srinagar – Pathankot – New Delhi.

Ideal Time to Visit: May and June are the best months to take this trail as these are dry months. Rain can make it a little difficult to ride through the hilly terrains. And the best part is summers don’t feel like summers as you ride uphill. The weather throughout the journey was pleasantly cold.

Entourage Strength: 20 Riders.

Preps: The preparations for the trip must include packing jackets and warm clothes. Physically and mentally training yourself to be attuned to the tough weather conditions, since oxygen levels drop as you go higher. A basic first-aid kit, and a few medicines should also be carried. And it is needless to talk about the riding gears and helmet. We had also arranged for a support car that was loaded with all the materials including fuel that might be required on the trip.

Assistive Gizmos: Go-Pro and camera goes without saying. Carrying extra batteries and memory cards for storage is also advisable.

Road & Traffic Conditions: The roads are not crowded, which made cruising fun and it came across as a stress buster. We touched a highest speed of 120 kmph on the way while the lowest was 30-40 kmph while covering and unwinding the hilly roads.

Best & Worst Stretches: The best stretch that I enjoyed as a rider were, plains between Manali and Leh, the road to Pangong and Leh to Kargil. Along this route, the must stop-by and admire stops will be Manali Sarchu road, Phobrang village, and Pangong Lake. The lake is much more than what you have seen in movies or in pictures. You have to be there to witness and admire the beauty of nature.

Weather Encountered: The weather was pleasantly cool. Thankfully, we didn’t encounter rains.

Food Joints & Stopovers: Talking about food, you get good eateries till Pathankot after which you will find roadside dhabas. The food that they serve is good, but check for the hygiene and cleanliness. Hotel Dreamland in Leh is great place to stay and eat. Further, it is advisable to eat light food while riding. You won’t find much to eat after you cross Manali. It will be mainly tea, sandwich, Maggi and biscuits. Carrying some light snacks along with you is also a great option if you are a foodie.

Bike Care: Check the bike and get it serviced. I paid special attention on checking and fixing clutch wire, brakes, and oil. I carried a few bike spare parts as well.

Locals: Our trip was planned with attention to the minutest of detail, so we got by without assistance. We hardly met any locals. But I think and assume, they must be friendly.

The trip was amazing and it gave me a journey that is memorable. I will cherish my ride from Delhi to Leh always. This experience that I have had is something that I love to share, discuss and relive with every conversation. I would surely love to ride to Leh again. Soonest!
